Most electroplating chemicals used in Pakistan are imported, mainly from China, India and Japan, and then sold on through traders and distributors. That gives buyers plenty of choice, but it also means the same product name can hide very different grades. Use this checklist before your next order.
1. Confirm the grade
"Nickel sulphate" or "boric acid" is not a specification. Ask whether the product is technical, industrial or plating grade, and what it has been used for. Plating baths are sensitive. A cheaper industrial grade can bring in enough iron, copper, zinc or organic contamination to cost you far more in rejects and bath treatments than you saved.
2. Ask about impurities
For metal salts, the important numbers are the impurities, especially other metals. Copper and zinc in a nickel bath show up as dark low-current-density deposits. Iron causes roughness. If a certificate of analysis is available for the lot, ask for it. If not, ask what impurity limits the supplier works to, and test a small lot before committing to volume.
3. Get the documents
- Safety data sheet (SDS): every hazardous chemical should come with one. For proprietary additives, such as brighteners, catalysts and suppressants, the SDS is often the only way to confirm what you are adding to your tank.
- Certificate of analysis: ask for one where available, particularly for your main salts.
- HS code and product identity: useful for your own records, audits and any onward documentation.
4. Check packaging and shelf life
Packaging tells you a lot about how a product has been handled. Chromic acid, for example, is normally supplied in sealed iron drums, while nickel sulphate and boric acid usually come in 25 kg bags. Check the stated shelf life. Ours ranges from 12 months for chromic acid to 24 months for nickel sulphate and boric acid. Reject bags that are torn, damp or caked.
5. Plan your storage
Some plating chemicals are hygroscopic. Zinc chloride, for example, pulls moisture from the air and cakes or liquefies if a bag is left open. Oxidisers such as chromic acid must be kept away from organic materials and reducing agents. Order in quantities you can store properly and use within the shelf life.
6. Compare prices like for like
Metal salt prices, and nickel salts in particular, move with international metal markets and exchange rates, so quotes are usually only valid for a short time. When you compare suppliers, compare the same grade, the same pack size and the same delivery terms. A lower price on a weaker grade or a smaller pack is not a saving.
7. Look at delivery and support
Ask where stock is held and how long delivery to your city takes. Ask whether the supplier can help when something goes wrong in the tank. A supplier who can also provide anodes, additives and equipment saves you managing several vendors.
